WENTWORTH, N.S. - A road through Nova Scotia's Wentworth Valley was closed for most of Tuesday after a tractor-trailer hauling 51,000 litres of jet fuel overturned on Highway 4.
RCMP said the highway was still closed at 7 p.m., 12 hours after the tractor-trailer slid of the road. The tanks carrying the jet fuel detached from the truck and were on their sides in a ditch.
"Apparently, there was a lot of slush and ice on the highway" at the time of the 7:04 a.m. crash, said Const. Dal Hutchinson.
The truck diver was treated for minor injuries at the scene by paramedics.
Crews that included hazardous materials units from fire departments in Amherst and New Glasgow were called in to deal with the crash.
The accident site was near the intersection of Highway 4 and Highway 368, an area known to residents as Mahoneys Corner.
None of the jet fuel spilled, but an unknown amount of diesel fuel did leak from the truck. It was contained and "there's no more concerns of any leakage of any kind," Hutchinson said.
When the Cobequid Pass opened in 1997, commercial trucks were banned from Highway 4 between Thompson Station and Glenholme.
However, a Transportation Department spokesman said the driver lives locally so is permitted to drive there.
