ONSLOW - Nova Scotia Power (NSP) has mobilized crews across the province to tackle problem areas in its grid to reduce outages.
Brad Roy, NSP supervisor, said Truro and its surrounding communities would be some of the first areas to receive improvements.
"Right now we are focusing on areas more prone to wind," Roy said Thursday.
He said work crews have been in the Onslow area for the past two days hardening the power plant, a process of reframing deteriorated hardware and tightening up lines, taking slack out of conductors.
Local crews are receiving help from two Amherst-based crews to speed up the repair process.
"People will see a very large difference after what we just did," said Roy. "We want to let the customers know we are here, we do care, we hear what they are saying and we are doing something about it."
He said the work is being carried out primarily to reduce the number of outages, which have been occurring frequently in recent months.
Roy said during December outages were a constant problem with crews dispatched to trouble spots day and night.
The supervisor said replacing aging poles and tree trimming is also included in the repair plan to refurbish infrastructure to new standards.
"Ten million (dollars) for sure will be spent on tree trimming, which is a big portion of our outages," said Roy.
He said the funds currently allotted for grid repairs are not included in a proposed $100 million infrastructure repair plan.

Perhaps they should hire some lineman and order them to carry out the regular service needed.

i hope the work is done by nsp as opposed to contractors, who have a tendency to do things ''quick and dirty''.
nsp needs to get back to hiring their own linemen.
as does aliant. there is no way that the hiring of contractors by both of these utility companies has helped the people of this province.in the end they have milked the people by not doing proper maintanence or re-investing in the infrastructure of this province.
go back to maritime tel and tel and back to when the province was in charge of the power. there certainly was alot less outages and of shorter duration.
