TRURO - A local factory has issued layoff notices as the downward-spiraling economy continues to widen its crippling impact.
Crossley Carpet Mills Ltd., has issued about 40 layoff notices that come into effect this week.
About a half dozen of the layoffs involve salaried personnel while the remainder are hourly employees.
"Most of them will go into effect this Friday," said Christine Carruthers, director of Human Resources at the Willow Street plant, which was established in 1964. "Hopefully this is it. We're assessing it as we go along."
Carruthers said the layoffs are simply a business reaction to a down-turned economy that is having a similar effect on its American-owned parent company Tandus.
The reduced staff will leave the factory with about 280 hourly workers and 80 management employees.
About a year ago, Carruthers
said, the plant employed a total
staff of about 400 people,
although, until now, that number
has dwindled through natural attrition as people who retired were not replaced.
