New estimates for the construction of a library in Tatamagouche higher than first anticipated

TATAMAGOUCHE - Increased construction costs could drive the cost of a new village library well beyond the half-million dollar mark if it proceeds as planned, Colchester County council has learned.
"We don't know what the cost of the library will be," District 7 councillor Jimmy LeFresne informed council last week. "The county may have to provide more."
Two years ago council approved spending $425,000 to construct a library in Tatamagouche to replace its existing tiny and aging structure.
Current construction costs have driven prices well beyond what was anticipated, however, and new estimates to construct the library at its proposed size have come in at about $650,000.
Plans for the proposed one-storey building have it at slightly more than 288 sq. metres (3,300 sq. ft.) a size that cannot be accommodated within today's construction prices of $200 per sq. ft.
In reporting the news to council, LeFresne said it is not a matter of the community coming back to council looking for extras within the library, but simply that increased costs have driven the price beyond what was planned for.
"So, I don't want to leave the impression that we're (the library committee) out there badgering council to pay more money," he said, but rather he was simply informing the municipality of the situation's reality.
The additional costs may have to come through a combination of government grants (if available) and/or community fundraising. From the perspective of Coun. Bill Masters, however, the county has already set its contribution figure and he believes that's where it should remain.
"If it's a million dollar library then it's a million dollar library. That doesn't necessarily mean this council is going to write a cheque for a million dollars. Or at least in my mind it isn't," he said.
"This is all council has approved. Whether its $200 a square foot or $2,000 a square foot, as of right now you've got $425,000 to work with. If there's other money you can get, you can build whatever you want. If that's all you've got then clearly you've got to reduce the size to fit that."

Michael, you may need less room for books but by the same token you will need more room for computers. A computer desk takes up a lot of bookshelf room.

We need some far-sightedness here. The world of books is going digital. Less and less room will be needed for libraries in the future. Keeping the new library small enough to fit the budget makes sense.

Do not cut the size of the library. It is badly needed in the village and has been long awaited. What if the community could donate some time, money, supplies and/or expertise. We have all seen the absolutely beautiful wharf they built while the women were away perhaps they could assist in this project too. The community has some extremely talented tradespeople that would probably be glad to assist in some way.
