ONSLOW - Failure to generate a profit is causing the closure of a popular farm market, effective Christmas Eve.
"As of Dec 24, RiverBreeze Farm Market will close its doors for good," says an information sheet being handed out to customers at the farm market, which has been in operation since 1999.
Owner Jim Lorraine, who could not be reached for comment on Tuesday, said in the release that since its opening, the market has been supported financially by the family's farming operation.
"At first we accepted this as part of normal business start up costs, however, we are no longer willing to take profitable parts of our business to prop up a non-profitable part," he said.
"We feel that by doing this we will be able to focus on our family farm and all it has to offer our customers, as well as our family."
It is only the market operations that are being shut down, Lorraine said, adding "all other aspects of our farm" will remain the same.
That includes the corn maze, haunted attractions, the pumpkin u-pick, strawberry u-pick and roadside fruit and vegetable stands.
"The only differnce will be that we will no longer operate our meat shop," he said.
The building that currently houses
the market will be used to supplement the haunted attractions by becoming a haunted slaughterhouse.

This upsets me! I too am a faithful shopper at the Market. Were the prices higher than the grocery stores? Of course, but it's the quality you were paying for. We knew where the meat was coming from and that it was fresh. I respect Jim's decision though for knowing when to stop before it made an even more negative impact on the budget.

Very sorry to hear you are closing. We bought our meat , especially the smoked pork chops, at your market for BBQ. The quality was the best.
Sorry for your staff, they all were great . Your market will be greatly missed by our family !!

Does this mean no more Turduckins??
This location was very clost to Truro and Biblehill and they had very nice friendly staff. Shame to see it close but I respect their decision.

That's crazy. I never would have thought the market wasn't turning a profit. Too bad. I like going there.

This is ashame, we got many of our meats there especially the ground beef as it was the best and leanest to be found. Sorry to see you close, but all the luck with your other operations.

I suspect it will be similar to last years closing for winter anouncement...
This will end with a reduced hours to cut overhead (They do appear to have a lot of staff for such a small operation), if they had said that from the off there would be protests, this way people beg for reduced hours.

This is a real shame, I got all my custom cut there, Personally I feel the location is what hurt the business, look at the Masstown market for example, Packed all the time....It a PITA detour to get to Riverbrezze if your going by....and even from Truro, you have to be dedicated to go that far out of town....
