TRURO - On top of being a champion racer, Somebeachsomewhere also has a good memory.
The well-known horse with Truro ties is now at a Pennsylvania stud farm where he bred 160 mares during the past year. Brent MacGrath, who trained and was one of the co-owners, said Beach "is living the good life.
"He roams around the field, eats grass and relaxes."
MacGrath has been down to visit Somebeachsomewhere a couple of times since his retirement. After not seeing him for about nine months, MacGrath went into the field and the horse sauntered over.
"We had our little wrestling match, playing around a bit, like we had his whole life," he shared Monday.
After 20 minutes MacGrath left, but returned four hours later in the dark.
"I hollered at him and he just came on the dead run. He definitely knew who I was," MacGrath said, estimating he was likely two acres away from the horse.
He said it is gratifying because they spent 16 hours a day together.
Somebeachsomewhere, whose mother's name was Where's The Beach, has bulked up since retirement.
MacGrath said the horse's legacy in the community will likely depend on his success in his new endeavour.
"If he's the same type of sire that he was a race horse, yeah I think it will carry on and I have every reason to believe he will be that kind of a sire," he said.
And while it has been a while since 'Beach was on the racetrack, MacGrath still fields questions on a daily basis about the horse.
"It's like any athlete, when they're not in the papers or on the radio every day they get forgotten about, but he still has a big following," he said.

I love this news about The Beach ! He is my all time favorite horse. How gratifying it must have been for Brent for The Beach to react to his voice that way! How could you not love that horse!! I know some of his offspring will probably have a good dose of his racing ability but I hope they inherit his personality as well. I hope this newspaper will keep us all posted on how he's doing and any news of his offspring!! Brent, you did one amazing job with this horse!
