BROOKFIELD - Temporary layoffs are set to begin Monday for 31 employees at the Lafarge cement plant.
Temporary layoffs are set to begin Monday for 31 employees at the Lafarge cement plant.
"It's unfortunate," plant manager Scarth MacDonnell said. "No one likes to be going through a layoff at Christmastime, but it's a business reality and we worked hard to get everyone back as soon as we could so we can start our winter maintenance period with our own people and not rely on contractors as much."
MacDonnell said the layoffs are related to a slowdown in the construction industry and because of that the plant is "having a slower year this year than last year."
"It's all planned," he said. "The majority (of the layoffs) are four weeks, some are five weeks but everyone will be back to work full time."
Employee recalls are to take place during the first two weeks of January, he said.
The Brookfield plant employs 47 hourly workers and 17 salaried workers.
MacDonnell said the plant's kiln was shut down Wednesday in preparation for the upcoming maintenance work.
