SYDNEY – Air Canada is making its Sydney to Toronto route a year-round service due to what it says is growing customer demand.

The daily service from J.A. Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport to Pearson International will begin on Dec. 18.

“This service caters to the business community, the tourism market and those visiting friends and relatives,” said Marcel Forget, vice-president of network planning at Air Canada.

It will be the only carrier offering flights to Toronto outside the peak summer travel period from Sydney.

The airline will operate the route under its Air Canada Express brand using a 50-seat Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet.

“A daily flight to Toronto will not only make it easier for people to travel for business and leisure, but also provide an economic boost for tourism and businesses in the community,” Helen MacInnis, the chief executive officer of the Sydney Airport Authority, said in a release Thursday.

“Now it is up to residents of the region to use this service in order to ensure it succeeds and is sustainable.”

The airport recently welcomed the addition of WestJet’s new seasonal service to Toronto, which began in May and continues until Oct. 26.

A second daily Air Canada flight to Toronto, which began June 22, meant the airport was seeing three daily flights to the country’s largest city over the summer months.

Air Canada has operated from the Sydney airport for 71 years.
