TRURO – A downtown warehouse on the A.J. Walker’s site has a new owner.
Chris Grant, owner and operator of Serious Sounds for the past seven years, has purchased a 4,400-square-foot building between Waddell and Walker streets.
The two-storey warehouse is located behind the main building that once housed the Walker’s hardware store.
“It will mainly be performance and accessories, and the name may change as well,” said Grant. “We specialize in auto electronics and customizations – such as exhaust and everything.”
The sale was finalized at the end of December but no price tag was revealed. Grant currently operates his business on Brunswick Street and he plans to move into the new site in the late spring or early summer. Its entrance will be on Walker Street.
Plans include adding a 20x50-foot showroom on the Walker Street side of the building.
“My plan is to use that new space for auto electronics, tires, rims and performance parts, among other things,” said Grant, who looked at several different locations since last fall. “This one was definitely the right price and location. You can’t beat that location.”
With four employees now, Serious Sounds hopes to add two to three more positions once the new store is open.
“We have some other ideas in the works and as the enlarged premises takes shape we’ll be able to give some serious thought to the new services being contemplated,” he said.
But first, there is some work to do with the new facility.
“There will be a bathroom going in where I’m standing now,” Grant said of the room just inside the existing door. “So a bathroom and offices have to go in, along with heating and insulation. There’s no insulation now at all.”
Serious Sounds is the third business to move onto the A.J. Walker’s property since the hardware store closed last February after operating since 1890.
Property co-owner Mona Legge opened Reining Western Wear & Tack in October, around the same time Maitland’s Maurice Rees and his wife, Dorothy, opened tshirtsrus.ca.
