AMHERST – Eleven full-time Scotsburn employees will lose their jobs in Amherst on April 1st. The dairy group is closing its Amherst processing facility – one of a number of “strategic operational changes,” according to a press release.
“The realignment is necessary and will better position Scotsburn to remain competitive and a leader in the dairy product sector,” said the emailed document.
The company said employees will be offered severance packages and other employment opportunities.
“Scotsburn must deliver excellent products at increasingly competitive prices. In today’s challenging market place, that requires the company to evaluate our operations to ensure we remain efficient,” CEO Doug Ettinger is quoted saying.
When reached by phone, Ettinger elaborated on the possibility of other Scotsburn jobs for dismissed employees.
“We have other facilities in Atlantic Canada…,” he said.
One of those facilities is in Truro – a site that has experienced growth. He anticipates that growth continuing and expressed hope employment might be found there for some of the former Amherst staff.
“We value our employees,” he said.
