AMHERST – Eleven full-time Scotsburn employees will lose their jobs in Amherst on April 1st. The dairy group is closing its Amherst processing facility – one of a number of “strategic operational changes,” according to a press release.

“The realignment is necessary and will better position Scotsburn to remain competitive and a leader in the dairy product sector,” said the emailed document.

The company said employees will be offered severance packages and other employment opportunities.

“Scotsburn must deliver excellent products at increasingly competitive prices. In today’s challenging market place, that requires the company to evaluate our operations to ensure we remain efficient,” CEO Doug Ettinger is quoted saying.

When reached by phone, Ettinger elaborated on the possibility of other Scotsburn jobs for dismissed employees.

“We have other facilities in Atlantic Canada…,” he said.

One of those facilities is in Truro – a site that has experienced growth. He anticipates that growth continuing and expressed hope employment might be found there for some of the former Amherst staff.

“We value our employees,” he said.

Amherst Town Council ... wake up and start earning your new 50% larger pay. You were elected to lead.....but where's your plan? What are you doing to retain businesses or get new ones? Stop spending money on decorating and start putting food on our tables. Too many of us are hungry and struggling to pay our taxes while you just line your pockets.

Dexter would not let this happen if it were a paper mill or closer to Cape Breton! How much would it cost to move Amherst closer to Cape Breton or Halifax. It is hard to believe the gate way to Nova Scotia is forgot about by the leaders in Halifax. The town has not grown in the past few years and we do have the new disco lights in down town.

they are closing the processing part and all the jobs that go with that. they are not sure if they are closing the cooler as they can pick the orders in truro and drop them off at the stores, sobeys superstore etc. its early but that leaves2 people in the cooler and maybe a few drivers. but most if not all with lose there jobs. and i agree with AL. nothing is being done to save jobs in this town. more and more are and have to move out west. Spending alot of money to make this town look good but for what? retired people, people who don,t work. I never heard of anyone speaking up to ask if the gov can help scotsburn or do anything. besides SB didnt jungle jims close and the call center downtown? Amherst should stop spending money on things that dont count and put there money in keeping jobs and people here.

whats wrong with you people,,cant you see and realize whats happening in our county,,where are the decent politicians to raise their voice to the provincial and federal governments and demand urgent help and assistant,,,,we have now new mayors,,councils,,,lots of promises,,,,and they can do?,,,,mark my words,,,,,nothing,,,,zero nothing,,until next election when we hear more empty promises,,our young generation dont have to leave their homes to alberta,, and other places to make a living,,,,we need a young agresive leadership and new blood,,,not retired people who have no idea how to create and bring buisness,,we need new spartacus to lead us,,we must raise our concerns and voices now,,,,,,if we really do care,,and have some dignity left in us,,thanks

noodle, don't you realize government can solve all our problems? council could do so...allow all businesses to pay zero tax and just raise tax on people....businesses will come and people will be employed...its that simple LOL

With the prices being charged for milk no wonder they are closing the facility, nobody in Amherst can afford to buy milk.

We'll here are more jobs that are gone and this new council has done nothing to keep them. We'll if this is how the next four years will turn out think it might be time to move.

And what exactly would you expect the council to do? The company has decided it is no longer profitable to keep its Amherst facility open, end of story.
