TRURO – The Truro and District Chamber of Commerce (TDCoC) is questioning the provincial government’s decision to move the offices of Access Nova Scotia from downtown Truro.

The tender for a new building is expected to be awarded this month.

“Financially speaking, this makes absolutely no sense,” said TDCoC president Don Hay in a news release. “The current building is only seven years old and was built to the exact specifications needed for Access Nova Scotia. This is a huge waste of taxpayers’ money.”

Earlier reports indicate the provincial government felt this move was a practical use of resources and would save money. The chamber disputes these claims.

“If the building was several decades old and in a state of disrepair, the move would be easier to swallow,” said Hay. “However, at just seven years old, this structure is still essentially new and considering it was built to the specifications of Access Nova Scotia, the decision to move seems completely arbitrary.

“At the end of the day, there seems to be no valid explanation for this move. On behalf of the chamber, I would challenge anyone in government to show us concrete figures that clearly outline the savings that will come from moving this operation from what is a very young building to a brand new one that needs to be built from scratch.”

The move to the current location was a mistake. Its a terrible location with a terrible parking lot. (If I'm thinking of the same building as the rest of you.) Move it. The only people who need to go to the Tenancy office are landlords and people they have disputes with. I assume everyone else who needs to go to Dept to Register Vehicles - has transportation. And perhaps they'll have a bigger facility so I don't feel like a sardine when I have to sit and wait for 2 hours.

Truro & District Chamber of Commerce questions government office relocation....hey the Truro & District Chamber of Commerce never questioned the naming of the new Truro and District Civic Centre..did they? Why then question this.....not like the office is moving out of the district...or is it a concern only because the government is moving out of a Rath building......Noton

As a private sector taxpayer, I would like to thank Mr. Hay for at least attempting to quell the needless squandering of our collective expropriated income. Access Nova Scotia, in my experience is simply a place where one pays tax of some sort. The location of where one pays this tax or the quality of the experience really does not matter to me. It would be more convenient if much of the function of ANS was accomplished via a call center or online.

I thought it was the Truro and DISTRICT Chamber of Commerce, not the downtown Truro chamber of commerce Why would the stick their nose in this.I beleive this Access Nova Scotia Office is there to serve the residents of the whole County. or should I say District. Ever think maybe there are others that may not find it convienent to go downtown

TDCoC LOL Smoke and mirrors as usual They are just worried about the exposure they will loose if people don't come to walker st to do business with the province. It's was a poor location to begin with. no parking and hard to exit.

Just another money grab hitting seniors and low income people in the wallet. Proposed location is out by the Irving Big Stop. Expensive cab ride for those with no transportation. Government must be looking to hire more out of province union labour to build it.

Yes the building is almost like new , however the loc is wrong. Most times you when you go the the Access Nova Scotia building and it is over crowded with no parking . When you leave the building and exit onto Walker St you can sit there waiting and waiting to get out. The loc should be moved .

Jobs start here" remember that? There is nothing like a new building with a sign out front as large as the building itself with pictures of the premier and the minister to attract attention is there. Remember this is free adverting to the party and a sure sign that the election call is not far away-hopefully.
