TRURO – The Truro and District Chamber of Commerce (TDCoC) is questioning the provincial government’s decision to move the offices of Access Nova Scotia from downtown Truro.
The tender for a new building is expected to be awarded this month.
“Financially speaking, this makes absolutely no sense,” said TDCoC president Don Hay in a news release. “The current building is only seven years old and was built to the exact specifications needed for Access Nova Scotia. This is a huge waste of taxpayers’ money.”
Earlier reports indicate the provincial government felt this move was a practical use of resources and would save money. The chamber disputes these claims.
“If the building was several decades old and in a state of disrepair, the move would be easier to swallow,” said Hay. “However, at just seven years old, this structure is still essentially new and considering it was built to the specifications of Access Nova Scotia, the decision to move seems completely arbitrary.
“At the end of the day, there seems to be no valid explanation for this move. On behalf of the chamber, I would challenge anyone in government to show us concrete figures that clearly outline the savings that will come from moving this operation from what is a very young building to a brand new one that needs to be built from scratch.”
