TRURO - Arts and crafts lovers relax - Gladys may have left the building but she hasn't skipped town.
Gladys' Crafts, formerly in the Fundy Trail Mall and owned by Gladys Ellis, has moved to a new location at 615 Prince St.
"We're getting calls from our old customers - 'Where did you go?"' her husband John said. "They thought we'd vanished off the face of the earth."
Had that been the case, Ellis's customers may well have had good cause for concern.
"We're about the only (arts and crafts supply) business left around here unless you go to Halifax," Ellis said. "And we get people from all over, Antigonish, New Glasgow, all over everywhere."
Ellis, who has been in the arts and crafts business for almost 30 years, had managed the store in the mall for years prior to becoming owner in 2006.
The store supplies everything from yarn to knitting needles, cross stitch and knitting books, tole paints, canvases, paper, beads, ceramics, sewing items, art supplies, brushes, ribbons, wood materials and more.
"A good variety. We stock everything that arts and crafts people use," she said. "And we teach classes too."
Ellis said she moved to Truro's downtown sector in part because her rent is lower than at the mall and also because she is counting on a higher traffic flow.
Having just opened up at the new site last week, a lot of customers still haven't found her new location, Ellis said. But she is counting on that changing soon.
"We're hoping," she said, of the prospects of increased business.
"And everybody who has come in so far has said, this is a better location for you. That's the response we're getting from our customers."
