Great Canadian Dollar Store on Pictou Road to double in size

BIBLE HILL - The Great Canadian Dollar Store on Pictou Road is becoming even greater - as in size.

"We're doubling it," said manager Kowanda Deal. "We'll be almost 10,000 square feet.

"We'll be Nova Scotia's largest, Canada's third largest."

The store is expanding into the space formerly occupied by MacQuarrie's Pharmasave.

Construction workers cut an opening into the wall connecting the two units on Monday and Deal said some merchandise will be moved into that space right away.

The full slate of supplies has yet to arrive, however, and the grand opening is not expected to take place until September.

"And I've been told it's going to be huge," she said of the celebration. "Once it's up and running at full capacity it will be huge and we'll have a big party."

The store will be expanding its party supply inventory along with other requested lines such as pet supplies, cards, wall art, etc.

"So we listened to the customers and what they wanted," Deal said.

Once the expansion is complete, the Bible Hill outlet will serve as the flagship store for owner Kevin Kane's 27 Maritime locations.

"So that means that we'll have things the other stores don't have," she said.

The largest Great Canadian Dollar Store is located in Quispamsis, N.B., which is located between Saint John and Sussex.

Dang, so much negativity here. You'd think that you'd be glad someone --a private business at that -- was expanding rather than closing up. But nope, it's all "complain complain complain." With these attitudes I'm not so surprised Truro's a dying town.

Only in the maritimes is where we would be proud of a dollar store lol. There are so many cheap people broke people and single mothers with loads of kids around here. It's great for the manager if she's able to double the stores profits and make more $$ her self. All the power to her. But as far as being all proud of the 3rd largest dollar store in Canada wow. We all need a life lol. Let's find something bigger and better to fight for.

I am a customer of this store and like everything about it. It is very well laid out and the prices cannot be beaten. I would say Ms Deal is an excellent manager and fully capable of managing a much larger store. She is very friendly and accommodating to customers I've noticed. Look forward to the new larger store!!

We agree with the comments of Joan Cameron. The manager and staff are very friendly. We should also be pleased the store is expanding here and not some other place at this time. This work provides short term construction employment, material sales, long term employment for others, new tax dollars for the community and more product lines. What is there to be negative about? So easy to complain when the dissers are afraid to even identify themselves. I believe anyone who hides behind a made up logo for a name should not be allowed to make any demeaning public comments.
