LONDON - Official figures show that inflation in the 16 countries that use the euro fell in August.
Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, said Tuesday that consumer prices rose by 1.6 per cent in the year to August, down from July's rate of 1.7 per cent.
That means that price rises remain below the European Central Bank's target of keeping inflation close to, but below two per cent.
The central bank meets Thursday and is expected to keep its main interest rate unchanged at one per cent.
In a separate report, Eurostat says that the unemployment rate in the eurozone held steady at 10 per cent in July.
