BERLIN - Germany's Federal Labor Agency says the unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.6 per cent in August as an improving economy bolstered the labour market.

The agency said Tuesday that the number of people registered as unemployed in Europe's biggest economy edged down by 4,000 compared with July to 3.188 million.

Agency board member Heinrich Alt said that "the good economic development further improved the situation on the labour market" and indicators are pointing in the right direction.

Export growth helped the German economy to grow by 2.2 per cent in the second quarter over the previous three-month period. Surveys have shown business and consumer confidence continuing to rise.
