AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Unilever NV, the maker of Ben&Jerry's ice cream and Dove soap, says its fourth quarter earnings fell by 27 per cent, as its year-ago figures were boosted by a one-time gain on the sale of a unit.
Net profit was C831 million ($1.15 billion) down from C1.14 billion a year earlier, when Unilever sold its Bertolli brand to Spain's Grupo SOS for C630 million. Fourth quarter sales fell 5 per cent to C9.66 billion, also due in part to the Bertolli sale.
Unilever says that stripping out the impact of disposals and restructuring, fourth quarter operating profit would have risen 4 per cent.
The company said Thursday that, ignoring the impact of disposals and restructuring, profit margins would have risen by a percentage point.
