HALIFAX Economist Tim O'Neill, a former executive vice-president at the Bank of Montreal, has been appointed by the province to review Nova Scotia's university system.
The appointment was announced Friday.
O'Neill will examine demographic trends and the financial situation of the institutions, and assess the long-term viability of the system.
He will also look at the links between the universities and economic and social development activities like research and development, the labour force and community economic development.
O'Neill will consult with universities, colleges, students and others in the university sector to develop policy options.
The government said his advice will help develop arrangements between the province and universities, including financial support.
