PINCHER CREEK, Alta. - An elderly southern Alberta man has died after being attacked by a bison.

Pincher Creek RCMP say the 71-year-old left a friend's home about 8:45 a.m. on Sunday and went for a walk along a rural road.

Although there were no witnesses, RCMP say that while on the walk, it's believed he encountered a bison which was on a grazing lease that the road passes through.

The victim sustained a single major penetrating wound to the lower abdomen as well as trauma to his head and was pronounced dead at the scene by local ambulance staff.

No criminal charges are anticipated against the owner of the bison who plans to isolate and put down the animal.
