TATAMAGOUCHE - Taxes are going up in the village of Tatamagouche, paving the way for much-needed sidewalk repairs.
Mike Gregory, chairman of the Tatamagouche Village Commission, said the village's sidewalks are in desperate need of repair and the only way to fund improvements is to hike tax rates by 17 cents per $100 of assessed property tax value.
"Our sidewalks are a mess, Blair Avenue is especially terrible," said Gregory.
He said sidewalks on three village streets need immediate attention - Blair Avenue, Maple Avenue and Main Street.
The province is in the process of repaving a portion of Route 6 that passes through the village, from the 311 Highway junction to Campbell's Bridge, but sidewalk and curb repairs are not included in the improvements.
An initial quote to fix the three sidewalks deemed a priority by the commission indicated it would cost $190,000.
"That just went out the window because we don't have the money," said the chairman.
A second quote suggested the current sidewalk asphalt could be chewed up and recycled during the repaving process and would cost $69,862.25, excluding Main Street.
The village tax base is about $27-million and the current rate of 34 cents per $100 of assessed property tax value will increase to 51 cents.
"In two years time, we'll look at it and see if we can drop it," said the chairman.
Gregory said the commission is concerned about risks and liabilities associated with the poor condition of the sidewalks and it takes away from the quaint image the village has worked so hard to maintain.
The commission is also requesting financial assistance from Colchester County Council to aid with repair costs.
Gregory was very disappointed at the lack of interest shown by village residents with less than 20 people attending the commission's annual meeting held at the Tatamagouche Fire Hall May 26.
He said it is extremely important for people to get involved in the community and to participate in discussions affecting them.
