OAKLAND PARK, Fla. - A Florida sheriff says an 80-year-old pilot is dead after his plane crashed into a home near Fort Lauderdale and sliced it in half.
Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti says Cecil A. Murray, of Tamarac, Florida, didn't survive this morning's crash in Oakland Park.
Murray reported mechanical and engine problems shortly after he took off from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.
Officials told him to turn the plane around and cleared a runway.
No one heard from him again.
Lamberti says it was an "absolute miracle" that Murray only crashed into one house.
No one was inside at the time, but the owner said his nephew had left to visit his aunt only a short time before the crash happened.
