TRURO - Every residence in Colchester County may soon have a composting bin.
Councillors have identified expansion of the county's green composting bin program as one of their priority projects.
During a committee meeting Thursday night, councillors gave preliminary approval to provide all residents in the county with a green bin.
The initiative would see almost 6,000 new seasonal and full-time rural residences being provided green bins for composting. The cost is an estimated $670,000, which will be funded by the capital reserve fund.
The effect on residents will be a standard rate across the board with new users adding an estimated $41.50 to their current waste collection bill. Existing users will see an increase of about $4.25, bringing the compost rate in line with the new users.
Mayor Bob Taylor said the initiative, if approved, would be cost effective for
everybody.
"We need to make better strides for waste diversion and people are tuned into recycling. We are not doing our part by not providing the compost bins countywide. We are falling behind in waste diversion," Taylor told the Truro Daily News.
He said if the project goes through it would not take effect until next June and public education sessions would be offered leading up to the implementation of the project.
