Canadian rockers Helix – Kaleb Duck on guitar, Greg Hinz on drums, vocalist Brian Vollmer, bassist and keyboardist Daryl Gray and Chris Julke on guitar – are coming to Truro for a performance at the Colchester Legion Stadium on July 25. This is the 40th anniversary of the band, with Vollmer the only remaining original member.
“It was during our first tour of the Maritimes in 1979,” said Brian Vollmer, band owner, manager and lead vocalist. “It was in the early days of the band, and we played at the agricultural college.”
At the time, the band’s booking agency scheduled them for performances at a lot of university and colleges, including Truro.
“I have a lot of memories of those days,” he said.
But now, as the band celebrates its 40th anniversary, Helix will perform at the Colchester Legion Stadium on July 25.
“I’ve gotten a lot of correspondence from people about the show, just saying that they’ll be at the show,” he said. “A lot are old friends or people who contacted me before on Facebook.”
While he’s the only original band member, Vollmer said the line up people would know from the 1980s still has three of those members – Brent Doerner, Daryl Gray and Greg “Fritz” Hinz.
Having released the band’s 13th album in May, Vollmer said you have to be in the business for the right reason for continued success.
“This is a different industry and if you’re only in it for the glory and the fame, those things thin fast. You have to love music and you have to love the lifestyle.”
Growing up on a farm in Ontario, Vollmer always wanted to travel and to get off the farm.
“I have been all across this country. It gives you an appreciation for everything. I remember when I was on a tour in Ontario and I was looking down the road to where the lights faded out into the darkness. I wondered what was beyond that.
“I still have that same feeling. It’s an experience, an adventure.”
Along with looking after all-things-Helix, Vollmer owns rental properties and also teaches Bel Canto lessons. In 1999, he released a solo album.
Tickets for the Truro performance, which also includes Darby Mills and The Headpins, are $45 each, taxes included. They can be purchased at MacQuarries Pharmasave in Truro, H&R Music in New Glasgow, and Leno’s Store in Elmsdale, or by calling 895-1248.
The show is open to all ages, with seating area an all-age admission. The floor is restricted to those over 19 years, and bar proceeds are going to the stadium.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the show starting at 7:30.
“We’re a very personable bunch of guys, so if people want to come get pictures with us afterward, or have something they want to get signed, or even to shake our hands, we’d love to meet them,” said Vollmer.
