TRURO - The Scott Woods Band is back this fall with a brand new show.
Scott Woods, from Fergus, Ont., said the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26 in Truro is included in the Maritime tour.
"We always try to have a brand new show every year," said Woods. "Last year, it was all about trains - we had a lot of vocals - but this year there's more emphasis on fiddle tunes.
‘Fiddle Legends,' which is being held on Sept. 23, will feature songs from well-known fiddlers, many of whom influenced Woods over the years.
"When I perform, there are people that come up to me and tell me I sounded just like Graham Townsend or Don Messer, and I take that as a real compliment because that's where I learned it. I learned notes out of their books or learned to play when I listened to them. I emulated them and admire them. Those were the kinds of fiddlers that influenced me."
He said audience members will hear the likes of Don Messer, King Ganam, Al Cherney, Graham Townsend, Ward Allen and Ned Landry, among others.
"Anybody that recognizes those names will know the songs," said Woods, adding the band adds its own flavour to the songs.
Joining Woods on stage this year will once again be his mother, who is still going strong on piano at the age of 72.
"Her arthritis is catching up to her but you can't hear it in her songs," he said.
Wes Dymond, 22, is joining the band this fall on the drums after recently graduating from Wilfred Laurier University's music program.
Seventeen-year-old Alanna Jenish rounds out the band.
"She's a champion fiddler and champion stepdancer, but she also plays guitar, bass and fiddle. She covers a lot of stuff for us."
Woods said the band will perform traditional country and gospel songs, as well as the inspirational stories he often tells.
"And, as everyone always asks, I'll be doing a carryover with my tricks. I'll be doing somersaults and I'm even going to walk on a barrel," he said with a laugh.
Woods performed at the legion last fall and looks forward to returning next month.
"It was a good turnout, a really nice house," he said.
The performance begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at MacQuarries Pharmsave or by calling 1-855-726-8896.
