TRURO – Dr. Hook, featuring Ray Sawyer, and the Stampeders will be featured on a double bill later this month at the Cobequid Educational Centre.
Kicking off the May 23 show is Parallels, a Toronto-based synth-pop trio. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.
Ray Sawyer, the spirited, eye patched lead singer of the group Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, whose soulful and sometimes comic vocals fronted the band’s breakthrough ‘Cover of the Rolling Stone’ to international superstar status in the early 70s and 80s, has been touring the United States, Canada and countries overseas since the break-up of the band in 1984.
Accumulating 60 gold and platinum records worldwide with Dr. Hook, Sawyer travels the globe with his band. He was inducted into the Alabama Music Hall Of Fame in April 2005.
Multiple Juno award winners and Canadian rock legends the Stampeders, best known for their 1971 Billboard chart topper, Sweet City Woman, went on to have 10, top-10 hits in Canada and four in the U.S.
The original Stampeders - Rich Dodson, Kim Berly and Ronnie King – were recently honoured with a lifetime achievement award from SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada).
Parallels combine the intense balladry of Kate Bush with the sweetness of Madonna’s true-blue era. Hot off the heals of a 36-date U.S. tour, they have shared the stage with such giants like Florence + the Machine, the Juan MacLean, Sebastian Tellier, and fellow Canadian comrades Broken Social Scene.
