TRURO - Studying arithmetic and catching up on class readings were put aside for Ayla Tebogt on Thursday.

Tebogt, an animation student at the Nova Scotia Community College, Truro campus, put her work on display for fellow students at Animediafest held in MacCarthy Hall.

"I love showing off my art and getting that out there," said Tebogt. "My animations aren't as strong as some of the pictures I like to paint and draw and stuff like that, but I still like to show people and get recognized a little bit."

NSCC students had a chance to share their skills earlier in the week with high school students who visited the campus for New Media Arts Day. But yesterday, the animation students were on display.

"Showing it off is something I'm a little more afraid of and I didn't really want to put anything in," said student Jessica Hanley.

Fellow student Ben Morton developed a passion for animation when he was younger through cartoons.

"It's always been a big influence and something I always dedicated a lot of time to," said Morton. "Cartoons were kind of like my comic book or my toys even; it was such a big part of my childhood."

So when deciding on post-secondary education, Morton stuck with his passion - cartoons - and enrolled in the animation program at the local community college.

"I actually ended up not liking the animation, like actually doing the animation as much. The cartoons let me down a little bit," he said. "It's still interesting to learn about, but I ended up liking life drawing and stuff like that but it helped me further my art."

The three-day festival had different events for the artists, including guest speakers from the field of animation and a game design competition. All events are open to students and the public.
